ROCK CLIMBING

Basalt rock creates the unique crack and face route climbs along the St. Croix River. Go back in time, and you will discover that this gray rock had fiery origins. About 1.1 billion years ago, a massive crack, or rift, split the earth’s crust in this area. Immense pools of lava oozed from the rift for many years and hardened into the basalt rock you may climb today.

The towering cliffs along the St. Croix River are made of a hard gray rock called basalt formed by ancient lava flows which make for fantastic climbing. The park itelf is not maintained for rock climbing, and all climbing is done at your own risk.

Climbers may encounter loose rocks and surfaces can become slippery when wet or leaf covered. Individual climbing permits are not required; however, climbing instructors should contact the park office regarding a use permit. First come, first serve on climbing routes.

TRY BOULDERING

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing on large boulders or small outcrops at very low heights, either as practice or as a sport in its own right.

Try out the official areas desginated for bouldering inside MN Interstate Park, the “rock park” (perfect for young kids) at Baker Orchard during harvest season, or spy some big boulders on your own and give it a try!

Always use proper trail and climbing etiquette while inside our state and local parks, and be sure to obtain permission before entering private property. And remember, safety first!

OTHER HEIGHTS ADVENTURES

TROLLHAUGEN AERIAL ADVENTURE PARK

Trollhaugen's Aerial Adventure Park provides the thrill of playing on a giant, floating playground. (Think Ewok Village meets Ninja Warrior). It's like climbing trees, hanging from tires, and swinging on ropes just like when you were a kid, on a far bigger scale and creative environment, with the backup support of world-class safety equipment.

WILD MOUNTAIN FREEFALL XP

The FreefallXP (experience) involves a 2 story tower with 2 platforms, one at 18' and one at 27'. Everyone is required to start with the lower platform. Once you demonstrate that you can jump safely (landing on your rear end or back) you will be allowed to go to the top platform. So, for your first ticket, you can get up to 2 jumps!
